Art Mistaken

I stood in wonderment at the art that I saw,
Two sculptures which caused indescribable awe.
I flanked a man with the same admiration,
And felt the need to begin conversation.

I asked of his thoughts and inquired of his feelings,
By his demeanor, with me he wanted no dealings.
I conveyed to him with great pride,
The joy of this experience while standing at his side.

The sculpture on the left was the work of a master,
It was solemnity in marble and plaster.
An aura of purity floated above,
Fragility akin to a crystalline dove.

The one on the right was enigmatic to me,
What was there for me to see?
I ventured to speak risking the scorn,
Asking if this was ugliness epitomized in human form.

I was stricken with the glory of the left sculpture now,
As it loomed next to an artistic atrocity I wondered how,
One could pair these two pieces, and it bothered me,
The man grabbed my arm and whispered, “I tend to agree.”

The man said, the one on the left is a Michelangelo,
To which I triumphantly said…”I know!”
The one on the right, illustrating man’s unending strife,
Well…that piece of work…that’s my wife!
